A Different Type of Art "Museum"
Posted September 29th, 2011 by Manitou Galleries

Imagine a trove of more than 300 paintings, some dating back to 1532. This isn’t a collection you’ll likely ever get to see in one spot, but Polish police have uncovered hundreds of paintings in a 92-year-old bricklayer’s shed.

The bricklayer can’t speak due to recent strokes, but there seems to be speculation that some of the works could be among those looted by the Nazis from Poland. How they got into the shed remains unknown. The Telegraph UK’s story and video are here.

Artists On Artists (Not All That Kindly)
Posted August 31st, 2011 by Manitou Galleries

We love lists – the goofier the better. We just stumbled on a great list of “Artists on Artists” quotes. As you’ll see, artists dissing other artists has been going on for centuries. The full list can be found here. A few of our favorite quotes:

William Blake on Peter Paul Rubens:
“To my eye Ruben’s coloring is most contemptible. His shadows are of a filthy brown somewhat the color of excrement.”

Titian on Tintoretto:
“He will never be anything but a dauber.”

Edgar Degas on Georges-Pierre Seurat:
“I wouldn’t have noticed it except that it was so big.”

Willem de Kooning to Andy Warhol (at a party):
“You’re a killer of art, you’re a killer of beauty, you’re even a killer of laughter. I can’t bear your work!”

Congratulations to Gail Gash Taylor
Posted August 15th, 2011 by Manitou Galleries

Congratulations to Gail Gash Taylor whose work included in the current exhibit at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C., "Pressing Ideas, Fifty Years of Women's Lithographs from Tamarind."  The exhibition includes work by forty-one women done between 1960 and 2010.

From the NMWA:

"Pressing Idea: Fifty Years of Women's Lithographs from Tamarind brings together a conversation among women artists who helped to uncover an artistic medium that had essentially lain dormant for decades and to revive the concept of working collaboratively. Featuring 75 works by 42 artists including June Wayne, Elaine de Kooning, Louise Nevelson, Margo Humphrey, Jaune Quick-to-See Smith, and Kiki Smith, Pressing Ideas explores the breadth of experimentation in lithography and women’s contributions to a workshop that stretches the creative boundaries."

Art Basel, Andy Warhol & Billy Schenck
Posted July 13th, 2011 by Manitou Galleries

Despite a few nay-sayers, the art world is not in the doldrums. One of the world’s premier art fairs – Art Basel – is reporting strong sales and interest. Galleries were showing (and selling) lots of big-name artists.

Artinfo had this to say about one such work that was for sale: “But the big fish, in these Warhol-crazed days, was the Pop master’s $80 million billboard-scaled ‘One Hundred Fifty Black/White/Gray Marilyns’ from 1980.”

If these are indeed “Warhol-crazed days,” keep on eye out for the new work by Billy Schenck that will be featured at Manitou Galleries Canyon Road on Friday, July 29.

Justified, Billy Schenck
